Canvas: Downloading Respondus LockDown Browser Respondus Lockdown Browser secures the page that students use to take quizzes and exams so they cannot access other web pages. Below are instructions to download Respondus LockDown Browser. Respondus LockDown Browser is a customized browser that increases the security of test delivery in Canvas. Respondus Monitor is used to capture the audio and video of students while they take their exams and requires the use of Respondus Lock Down Browser. Respondus LockDown Browser Required This quiz requires Respondus LockDown Browser. Please launch Respondus LockDown Browser to take this quiz or view your quiz results. This video shows how LockDown Browser works within Canvas courses. When students use LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another website. For the latest three versions of Windows 10 or macOS operating systems, students can download the Respondus Lockdown Browser by going to the Student Resources within Canvas or click here. Note: Respondus LockDown for Chromebook is currently not supported.

  • Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a secure browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. It allows students to take a quiz in a locked down environment. When students use LockDown Browser, they are unable to print, copy, go to another website/URL, or access other software programs. The LockDown Browser should only be used for completing quiz assignments in Canvas.
  • Respondus Monitor requires the Respondus Lockdown Browser and is an add-on which uses the student's webcam to utilize video to further prevent cheating during online quizzes.

  • Students: Respondus Lockdown Browser / Monitor is an application that must be installed on your computer. Please visit the Getting Started with LockDown Browser Guide for additional details.
  • Instructors: Respondus Monitor is an additional product that works with Respondus LockDown Browser to use the student's webcam to utilize video to further prevent cheating during online quizzes. It is currently available for all courses until 5/31/2020, after which it will only be available for use by specific courses in the College of Business and Economics. Respondus is a convenient tool for instructors to create and manage exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to Canvas. Respondus is a PC Only application and it is available in the Zenworks Application Launcher for installation. Respondus Campus-Wide can also be downloaded and installed on personal devices.

Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser tool that prevents students from accessing external resources during proctored assessments administered in testing centers and computer labs (it is installed on Windows computers in the STCs). While taking assessments using LockDown Browser, students are unable to print, copy, go to other web pages, or access other applications. Once students start their assessments, they are locked into them until they submit them for grading. LockDown Browser is available for use in Canvas.

Respondus Monitor, the auto-proctoring component of Respondus LockDown Browser, is available without fee for the 2020-21 academic year to all IU courses, provided the instructor submits the Online Proctoring Acknowledgement. Download and install Respondus LockDown Browser

If an instructor requires you to use Respondus LockDown Browser for added security when taking a test or quiz, you'll need to download and install Respondus LockDown Browser before you can start the test or quiz.

Instructors need to edit the exam settings to allow Chromebooks and iPads to access Respondus LockDown Browser. The LockDown Browser extension for Chromebook is in a beta release phase, and may be less reliable than the versions for Windows or macOS. Android tablets cannot use Respondus LockDown Browser.

You must have full administrative privileges on your device to install Respondus LockDown Browser. If you are using a Mac, to check if you are an administrator or need to create an administrator account, see How to Create a New Administrator Account on Mac OS.

To download and install Respondus LockDown Browser:

  1. Go to your Canvas course site and click the link for the quiz that requires Respondus LockDown Browser.
  2. Click Take the Quiz.
  3. Click Download Respondus LockDown Browser or navigate to Download LockDown Browser.
  4. Follow the instructions for your device type:
    • On a computer:
      1. Confirm that your operating system is correctly displayed in the section on the left side of the Respondus download page (Windows or Mac). If not, click Do you need the [Other Operating System] version?
      2. Click Install Now. This will download either an .exe file (Windows), a .pkg file (Mac), or a .zip file containing a .pkg file (Mac).
        On macOS, after downloading the .pkg file or unzipping the .zip file to get to it, ensure that the filename of the .pkg file ends in a nine-digit number, with nothing appended to the end (such as '-2,' which can happen if there is an old installer with the same name in the download directory). If the filename does not have the correct ID at the end, the installer will fail.
      3. Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions.
    • On a Chromebook:
      1. You will be redirected to the LockDown Browser extension in the Chrome Web Store. Click Add to Chrome.
      2. When the extension has been installed, you will see a screen telling you to go to the quiz in your LMS to continue. You will also see a note on your screen identifying the LockDown Browser extension icon. Once the extension is installed, LockDown Browser will find and use it for subsequent exams. Return to the quiz in Canvas and click Quizzes again to restart the quiz. Then proceed to the instructions below to take the quiz.

Take a quiz

On a computer

To take a quiz using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor:

  1. Run LockDown Browser from your desktop (Windows) or from your Applications folder (Mac).
  2. You may see a pop-up suggesting that you close one or more programs before continuing. Click Close Process to have LockDown Browser do this for you.
  3. When prompted, log into Canvas with your IU username and passphrase.
  4. Locate and click the quiz you need to take.
  5. Click Take the Quiz.
  6. You will be taken to a prompt where you will have to satisfy the following criteria:
    • Student Photo: Take and provide a clear photo of yourself.
    • Show ID: Make sure to use a valid form of identification with an image of yourself on it.
    • Environment check: You must move your webcam around to show your working environment.
    • Facial Detection Check: LockDown Browser will detect that your face is in front of the device you are using.
      If you leave the webcam's frame, Respondus will track that your face has left your working environment.
  7. Take your quiz. When you have entered all your answers and are ready to submit them, click Submit quiz.
  8. Log out of Canvas.
  9. Click the X to close your browser window. When you see 'Are you sure you want to quit Respondus LockDown Browser?', click Quit.
  10. Your quiz has now been submitted, and you will be returned to your computer.

On a Chromebook

  1. If you have not already done so, start (or restart) your quiz from within Canvas.
  2. You will be taken to a prompt where you will have to satisfy the following criteria:
    • Student Photo: Take and provide a clear photo of yourself.
    • Show ID: Make sure to use a valid form of identification with an image of yourself on it.
    • Environment check: You must move your webcam around to show your working environment.
    • Facial Detection Check: LockDown Browser will detect that your face is in front of the device you are using.
      If you leave the webcam's frame, Respondus will track that your face has left your working environment.
  3. While you are taking the exam, you will see that your window is labeled 'LockDown Browser' in the upper right corner. When you have finished, submit the quiz in Canvas.
  4. Answer the feedback questions and click Submit.
  5. You will be taken back to the Canvas quiz page, still in LockDown Browser. Close the LockDown Browser window by clicking the X next to the LockDown Browser label at the top right of the screen.
  6. You will see a screen that says 'LockDown Browser for Chromebook; the exam has completed; Press the continue button to exit LockDown Browser.' Click continue. LockDown Browser will close, and you will be returned to Canvas.

Troubleshoot Respondus LockDown Browser

If you find that LockDown Browser won't connect, open, or load, reboot your computer. This will fix most minor issues with the software.
