Welcome letter to parents -

Good afternoon Seventh Grade parents and guardians,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I will be your child’s Seventh Grade ELA teacher whether you have selected the fully remote or blended option. Firstly, I want to thank you for being so flexible during this unprecedented start to a school year. This year, as Seventh Graders, students will use many of the programs they did in Sixth Grade-- including Google Classroom, Nearpod, and PearDeck. In addition to these programs, we will be using CommonLit and Quill to enhance reading and writing instruction. The goal this year is to help students grow as lifelong learners by focusing on critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, writing mechanics, purposeful word choices, and discussion techniques.
To promote reading and analysis, students will start the year by working on an Independent Reading Project. Over the course of two months, they will summarize a novel of their choosing and work on a series of four projects. As some students’ reading levels may be ahead of their developmental level, it’s essential that each student obtains approval from a parent or guardian before choosing which book to read. Websites such as lexile.com and commonsensemedia.org can assist you in researching the appropriateness of a text. Students have the option to read a print book or an eBook from a retailer or a library. eBooks may be obtained for free from the Queens Public Library and can be read on any device with an internet connection. Students will be submitting their book choices on Friday, October 3rd, so if your child has not already discussed the book choice with you, they should do so before Friday. You can find full details about the Independent Reading Project on your child’s Google Classroom page.
The Independent Reading Project will complement the work we will be completing in the classroom, whether virtual or in-person. Students have already begun to analyze poetry and are picking up the nuances of each digital platform well. This year, students will enhance their writing skills by composing a 5-paragraph expository essay, a 5-paragraph argumentative essay, a series of poems, and a multitude of short responses. We will utilize several digital platforms to enhance each and every student's reading, writing, and discussion skills.Speaking of digital platforms, here is some important information about the programs we will be using in ELA this year. If new programs are developed, this list may grow.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom will be the main place to find ELA assignments. Every day, students will be working on classwork and/ or homework that has been assigned via Google Classroom. As all assignments are posted in this one place, it makes it easier to keep up with school work. Materials such as writing templates, reading guides, and assignment instructions will also be available in Google Classroom. Links to assignments will be posted in Google Classroom as well. If the assignment is to complete a reading in CommonLit, for example, the link will appear in Google Classroom.
CommonLit
CommonLit is a digital platform that hosts a library of thousands of informational and fiction texts. Many of the reading and writing assignments this year will be through the CommonLit website. A typical assignment in CommonLit will involve reading a short text, making annotations, answering guiding questions meant to check for understanding as the student reads, and assessment questions. The assessment questions are often a combination of multiple-choice and short response questions.
Quill.org
Quill.org is a digital platform that provides 10-15 minute lessons about writing mechanics. These lessons are tailored to each student’s needs. At the start of the year, I will be administering an online diagnostic assessment. This assessment will drive individualized writing instruction throughout the school year.
JupiterEd
JupiterEd is the main form of communication I will be using. It is also the grade book I will use for ELA. Once an assignment has been graded, it will appear in JupiterEd. Some intensive assignments, such as essays, may take time to grade, so to stay up-to-date with your child’s work, please check Google Classroom. If, for example, you want to check that an assignment has been completed on time, your child can show you the completed assignment on any internet-enabled device.
Online Lessons
Students are required to attend synchronous online lessons according to the BELL schedule they will receive. If your child is unable to attend a lesson, please notify the Main Office or send me a message on JupiterEd. Asynchronous lessons are completed independently without a video call or in-person lesson. Currently, online lessons are being held using Google Meet which requires students to be logged into their BELL Academy accounts. The NYC Department of Education also offers teachers the option of using Zoom or Microsoft Teams for online teaching. Both Microsoft Teams and Zoom require each student to log into their Department of Education Student Account, so it is important that students know their usernames and passwords. Each method of accessing an online lesson has its unique advantages, hence we may switch between the three during the year. Any method of accessing an online lesson will be clearly stated in each day’s Google Classroom assignment.
Department of Education Student Accounts
The DOE has created student accounts for every New York City public school student, including 3K and Pre-K students. These accounts allow students to access report cards, enrichment lessons, emotional support materials, and video meeting software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

Grading Policy
The Grading Policy for 7th Grade ELA will remain the same as the 6th Grade policy. It is as follows:

25% Writing and Reading Assignments
