Graco Nautilus Booster Seat Installation

I just bought a Graco Nautilus. I have to move the crotch strap to the more forward position; it seems to be impossible to stuff the strap and buckle up through the plastic slot in the base the way they tell you to. Are you really just supposed to figure out a way to force it?
I am also wondering whether the inside cushion (the one labelled 'body support') can just be removed with a larger child. It seems like that would give us a better chance of the crotch strap fitting.
I got this seat because I thought it would be great to have the side-impact protection and harness up to 65 lbs. But now I'm wondering if I should have just picked a booster. (Especially because the other crotch strap position doesn't look that far ahead of the one that's currently clearly under her.)
(My daughter is 40', 35 lbs, and will be 5 years old next month. So as I fight with these straps, any encouraging stories about how long you were able to harness your child in a Nautilus would be greatly appreciated.)
